Blue Mountains Tourist : Winter 2011
A 'must see' experience - Award-winning Jenolan Caves Free iPhone app www.scenicworld.com.au/bmapp 19 Jenolan Caves has won numerous awards over the years, most recently a Gold in the 2010 NSW Tourism Awards as the 'Best Tourist Attraction in NSW'. Open daily, Jenolan offers free parking and underground activities for all ages. Competitively priced cave tours include family options and discounts. Located on the western edge of the Blue Mountains World Heritage Area, Jenolan is one of the world's oldest and finest cave systems. It offers a range of amazing guided tours of 10 awe-inspiring caves, richly draped with limestone crystal. Many tours include views of the underground river. There is also a range of challenging Adventure Caving tours and a self-guided tour of the Nettle Cave, which is available in 11 languages. Facilities include a bistro, grand hotel and magnificent, award-winning Chisolm's Restaurant. When not exploring the mysterious underworld, visitors can walk in pristine bush, and glimpse shy native wildlife, including platypus and wallabies. Night cave tours -- every night except Sundays -- are a recent innovation at Jenolan, especially the popular 'Legends, Mysteries & Ghosts' tour (Wednesdays and Saturdays). On other nights, tours include the intriguing 'Off the Track', where visitors have the opportunity to visit areas of the caves not seen on regular tours. During NSW school holidays and on weekends, visitors who book a Cave Tour/Country Luncheon package can enjoy lunch in magnificent Chisolm's Restaurant. The advantage of the package is that the two course lunch costs as little as $15 per adult, depending on the cave tour purchased. This package can be economical for families, especially as pre- school age children eat free! Most Saturdays also feature extraordinary events, such as underground performances or themed dinners in Chisolm's. For example, June features an underground 'murder mystery' on June 4th, cello concert on the 18th, a gypsy concert (sensual guitar and sizzling violin) on the 25th plus a fun and indulgent history-themed dinner (also on the 25th). July visitors can take part in an annual Blue Mountains tradition -- Yulefest (Christmas in July). During Yulefest, adults can experience the feeling of Christmas, and children can meet Santa Claus inside one of the famous caves. Overnight guests can enjoy log fires, Christmas tree and Christmas-style dinner in Chisolm's. In July, there will be another 'murder mystery', and underground concerts on the 9th, 16th and 23rd. And during the NSW July school holidays, in addition to the full range of cave tours, there will be engaging tours for children and teenagers -- educational and fun. August features underground concerts on the 20th and 27th and the chance of snow. Also on August 20, lovers of fine food and wine can take part in an indulgent 'Truffle Dinner' in Chisolm's. Anyone who appreciates good food can take this chance to sample a rare delicacy and learn all about truffles at the same time! To learn more about Jenolan Caves visit www.jenolancaves.org.au.
