Blue Mountains Tourist : Spring 2010
spring 2010 www.bluemountainstouristnewspaper.com.au 5 When the 46th annual Leura Gardens Festival takes place in October, 10 of the Blue Mountains most spectacular gardens will open to the public, showcasing a kaleidoscope of colour, musical performances and art. The Festival will take place at various locations from October 2 -- 10, with the Leura Village Fair held in Leura Mall on October 9 and 10. Two of Leura's most historic gardens will be among those to open for the festival. The Braes and Everglades were both designed by noted landscape gardener Paul Sorensen in the early 1900s. The gardens of Shenstone, Rustlings, Brabourne, Greenheys with Soleby and Dead End House, Elouera, Abbotsford, Ilion and for the first time, Tandella, will also open. The return of The Braes will be a highlight of the 2010 Festival. This two hectare private estate has undergone extensive restoration and features stone walls, water features and a variety of conifers, deciduous and flowering trees. Of special interest are descendant specimens of the Aleppo Pine from Lone Pine Ridge at Gallipoli and three first generation Wollemi Pines. Visitors will be entertained with a variety of musical performances and art exhibitions in some of the gardens and can also enjoy refreshments in the gardens of Everglades. Each garden will be open to the public from 9.30am to 4.30pm. Hop-on-hop-off shuttle buses will meet trains arriving at Leura station and run between the gardens throughout the day, departing approximately every 20 minutes. The cost of the bus is $5.00 per person all day. Garden entry tickets will be available for purchase at the Leura Gardens Festival stand located at the top of Leura Mall, at the entrance to each garden, and at Festival Headquarters in Fitzroy St, Leura. A multiple entry ticket, covering entry to each of the gardens for the duration of the Festival, will cost $20.00 per person and entry to individual gardens, $5.00 per person. Groups are well catered for with group tickets and a central meeting point for coaches. Groups can arrange viewings of the gardens during the two weeks prior to, and following the festival. The Leura Gardens Festival is a registered charity run by local volunteers. All funds raised are donated to local medical foundations and used to purchase equipment for the Blue Mountains District Anzac Memorial Hospital.
