Blue Mountains Tourist : Summer 2009 - 10
Pizza worth the journey There's a small pizza place at Little Hartley that's winning a reputation with Aussies and overseas visitors who reckon its pizza is the best they've tried. The Talisman Gallery and Woodfired Pizza Caf is at 2360 Great Western Highway, just west of Victoria Pass. The Gallery is filled with inspired metal creations -- mirrors, candleholders, clocks, sculptures and unique furniture by craftsman Ron Fitzpatrick. Through this unusual gallery is the wood-fired pizza café, which opens onto a large verandah overlooking the beautiful Hartley Valley. Recently, while eating lunch on the verandah, an Irishman asked Ron: "Is that your artwork in there -- it's really good?" The Irishman, Allan, had flown into Sydney the day before and was heading to Bathurst to propose to his long-distance girlfriend. "Each time I've come this way I've heard people talk about this fabulous pizza place at Hartley, so today I decided to check it out," Allan said. "Did it live up to the hype?" Ron asked? "Best pizza I've ever tasted mate," said Allan. Then there was a couple just back from a European holiday. As they were leaving, the woman volunteered: "We've just spent four weeks in Italy and we never had pizza this good." So what makes a really memorable pizza -- is it just the ingredients or something more? "We use nothing but organic unbleached flour, fresh quality ingredients and of course they are cooked in the traditional wood-fired oven," says Ron. "But we also have a passion for pizza -- and I think the secret to any good cooking is that you must care about what you are doing." You can certainly believe that when you try a Talisman pizza -- and some of the toppings are unusual. The café is open for lunch and dinner Thursday to Sunday while the gallery is open from 9.00am to 5.00pm Wednesday to Monday.
