Blue Mountains Tourist : Winter 2009
Bent Art 2009 The Bent Art Exhibition is held in the Blue Mountains every year over the June long weekend. What began in 2005 as an idea by three Blue Mountains women to celebrate works in the visual arts by lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender artists, has become the largest art event of its kind in Australia. Last year, more than 40 artists exhibited over 100 pieces of work, including paintings, drawings, photographs and sculptures and - according to the organisers - this year's event will be just as exciting. There are two major awards associated with the exhibition - The Bent Art Prize and the People's Choice Prize. also four category awards for painting, sculpture, photography and alternative media. Over the years, curators and judges have included Professor Amanda Lawson (Dean, Faculty of Creative Arts - University of Wollongong, Director of Bathurst Regional Art Gallery), Richard Perram (Bathurst Regional Art Gallery), John Kirkman (CEO, Penrith Regional Gallery) and Ingrid Hayden (well-known Sydney painter). This year the judge is Archibald and Sulman Prize winner Euan MacLeod. The exhibition is held at the Katoomba Civic Centre over the four day weekend (Fri 5 Jun 6.30-9.30pm; Sat/Sun 10.30am4.30pm; Mon 8 10.30am-2.30pm).
